Educational Animal Center
In corporation with the Ministry of Education, the Society for Protection of animals abroad (SPANA-Jordan); established an educational animal centre in Al-Hassanieh school for girls in Um-Quseir. In response to SPANA’s long term objective to educate people by what ever means are appropriate, so as to increase awareness about how the welfare of animals and preservation of environment is dependent on mans responsible behavior, and the fragility
of some wild life habitats. In response to this objective, the project of the educational animal centre was necessary to complement and reinforce lessons about animals and their role in the environment as taught in schools as a partof animal protection clubs programme, and to enable children to experience live animals in a supervised and controlled environment. Being close to Amman, the 3000 square meters educational centre is relatively accessible to people from all social categories and mixed economic situations, the primary target group will be school children between ages of 9-16 years who are members of SPANA’s animal protection clubs scheme, but other school’s requesting visits will also be given access during school hours. This centre will provide a wide variety of educational activities: an important activity would be the chance to handle domestic animals as well as farm animals living in optimum conditions, also visiting a specially designed interactive exhibition room on animal welfare and environmental conservation as well. A trained staff in a specially designed classroom will give lessons, lectures and workshops. The project will also host an environmental pool as a chance to study an aquatic ecosystem with all its elements. Special events will also be held from time to time focusing on other target groups visiting the site. Workshops seminars and conferences will be organized for teachers involved in animal protection clubs.
